The King's Port Inn would like to wish everybody a happy Memorial Day Weekend! We hope you spend the holiday with friends and loved ones. Memorial Day, was originally called "Decoration Day", and is a day of remembrance to those who have died in service of the United States of America. Memorial Day was born out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was originally proclaimed on May 5th, 1868, by General John Logan, but was later changed to the last Monday in May. The purpose of the holiday is to bring flowers and decorate the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country. On the first Decoration Day, General(and future President), James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there.
This coming weekend, Memorial Day will be celebrated in Kennebunkport and surrounding areas. Here is a list of the local services:
Kennebunkport: 9:30 am Monday. The Memorial Day parade in Dock Squre will start on Temple Street and wind its way along Spring Street and down Western Avenue to Cooper's Corner in Kennebunk and back again. A 21-gun salute will be held at the Mathew Lanigan Bridge.(The Bushes usually attend)
Arundel: 11am Sunday. The Arundel Historical Society holds a service at the Veterans Memorial at the fire station on Limerick Road.
Cape Porpoise: 11+am Monday. Half an hour after the ceremony in Dock Square, a smaller version of the parade will regroup around 11 am in Cape Porpoise for a second parade.

Dock Square in Kennebunkport!
The King's Port Inn is hoping everybody is enjoying the month of May! It's such a wonderful time to be in Maine, whether you're a tourist or a local resident. The seaside community of Kennebunkport offers many great attractions. This is a beautiful town with lots of fun spots. We wanted to take time to mention more about the center of town-Dock Square.
Dock Square is considered the center of Kennebunkport. It is known for its quaint boutiques and local craft shops, selling everything from souvenir shirts to handcrafted jewelry. Dock Square is also home to many highly rated restaurants including Hurricane and the Clam Shack, which has appeared on the Food Network for its famous lobster roll, fried clams, and mouth watering seafood. Local favorites include Alison's and Federal Jack's, which is located above it's very own Shipyard Ale Brewery that visitors can tour to watch how local beer is made.
Kennebunkport is also home to fancier, special event dining that is definitely worth the extra spending. The White Barn Inn in Kennebunk is New England's only five star, five diamond restaurant, a truly unique experience. There is also "Ocean" a spectacular restaurant across the way from the Bush compound. With it's gourmet food, and panoramic ocean views, Ocean is a must do on any special event.

Happy May!
The King's Port Inn would like to wish everybody a happy May! The month of May marks the beginning of the warmer days and better weather. It is in May(late May) that typically marks the start of the summer vacation season in the United States, and especially here in Maine. After such a long winter, it's great to have the beginning of summer before us. The King's Port Inn would like to share some interesting history about the month of May:
May is the fifth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and the third month to have the length of 31 days. May is also the month with the shortest name with three letters.
The month of May was named for the Greek Goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility, Bona Dea. Also, the Roman poet Ovid says the month of May is named for the maiores, Latin for "elders", and that the following month (June) is named for the iuniores, or "young people".
May's birthstone is the emerald which is emblematic of love and success. The May birth flower is the Lily of the valley and the Crataegus monogyna. The zodiac signs for the month of May are Taurus (until May 20th) and Gemini (May 21 onwards). Also, in Catholic tradition, May is the Month of the blessed Virgin Mary, and her blessed devotions.
May is also the month for many month-long observances: The Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, National Mobility Awareness Month, Better Hearing and Speech Month, National Electrical Safety Month, Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and South Asian Heritage Month.
