March Fun Facts!

The King's Port Inn is wishing everybody a happy March! This is perhaps the last month of winter and spring is just around the corner. The weather is still cool, but the days are getting lighter with more sunlight. We believe it's still a great time to get out and enjoy the season. Maine is a beautiful state year-round. Here are some fun facts about the month of March:
If you were born before 150 B. C., March is the first month on the calendar! The old calendar was only 10 months long, beginning in March and ending in December. In the old Roman calendar, January and February were two nameless months called "winter". Proving that winter is literally so awful it doesn't even deserve a spot on the calendar!
March is the best month for basketball. March Madness, the NBA, and cold weather forcing people inside, gives March the edge for basketball activity. In fact, when March Madness runs from March 15th to April 14th, lots of workers will be distracted, costing American companies 1.9 billion in lost wages. Apparently, unproductive workers spend company time focusing on betting pools and brackets. On a side note: the chances of filling in a correct winning bracket for the college tournament is a staggering 1 chance per 9,200,000,000,000,000,000(called 1 in a 9.2 quintillion).
March was names for war-and lives up to that title. March was named after Mars-the Roman God of War and mythical ancestor of the Roman people. With winter frosts melting and the ground becoming fertile for harvest, March was historically the perfect month for both farmers to resume farming, and warriors to resume warring. Incidentally, the Pentagon seems to agree with this Romas tradition: All major US-NATO led military operations since Vietnam, with the exception of the recent War on Afghanistan, have begun in March.
Beware The Ides of March. We've all heard the phrase "beware the Ides of March", but what does it actually mean? On the Roman calendar, the midpoint of every month was known as the Ides. The Ides of March fell on March 15th. This day was supposed to correlate with the first full moon of the year and marked with religious ceremonies. Supposedly, in 44 BC, a seer told Julius Caesar that his downfall would come no later than the Ides of March. Ignoring the warning, we went his way to a senate meeting at the Theatre of Pompey, and was assassinated by as many as 60 conspirators, on the very day of March 15th. Thus, "the Ides of March" refers to some consequential event on the horizon.
