Fun Facts About Maine

The King's Port Inn is a lovely hotel in the seaside community of Kennebunkport, Maine. We are priviledged to reside here and call it our home.
So, in honor of the state of Maine, we would like to share some interesting facts about the state we all love:
1. We are nicknamed the "Pine Tree State" beacuse of the abundance of pine trees in the state of Maine
2. Maine became a state in 1820 after it broke from Massachusetts, in what was called the "Missouri Compromise". Maine would become a free state and Missouri would become a southern state.(Before the Civil War).
3. Maine has an average summer temperature of 70 degress and average winter temperature of 20 degrees. Which makes it a relatively comfortable place to live.
4. With a population of only 1.4 million people, Maine is the most sparsely settled state east of the Mississippi River.
5. Maine's largest county, Aroostook, is larger than the state of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined.
6. 99% of the wild blueberries in the U.S. come from Maine. It is a 75 million dollar a year crop.
7. The only state park in New England is Acadia National Park.
8. Maine is the only state in the union that borders only 1 other state(New Hampshire).
9. Maine has over 6,000 lakes and 4,613 islands.
10. The second English attempt at a permenant settlement in America was at Popham Beach in 1607, 13 years before Plymouth Rock. Due to the harsh winter, the settlers were forced back home.
