Maine Fun Facts

The King's Port Inn is hoping everybody is enjoying this beautiful summer season! We hope you are spending time with family and friends. The weather has been fantastic here in Kennebunkport.
The summer is a great time to spend in Maine.  Every year, thousands of tourist flock to Maine for the sandy beaches, fresh sea food, and clean and natural environment. Tourism is the number one industry in Maine.
So, we would like to share some fun facts about our beloved state, that we hope you enjoy:
1. No one knows exactly how Maine got it's name: Some believe it is short for "mainland", others believe it was named for the French province of Maine.
2. Acadia National Park's Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the East Coast. Named after explorer Antoine Laument de la Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, it is 1530 feet tall, and from Octoboer through March, is the first place where the sun rises in the United States.
3. Maine's annual lobster yield is 60 million pounds, with 124 million caught in 2014. That's almost 90 percent of the United State's lobster supply.
4. Portland, Oregon is named after Portland, Maine. The Oregon City was founded by two New Englanders, one from Massachusetts, and the other from Maine. After a coin flip, Francis Pettygrove of Maine got the chance to name the city. He picked Portland to honor his hometown.
5. Maine used to be part of Massachusetts. The former Massachusetts province spent decades after the American Revolution campaigning for indepenedence, and finally gained official statehood in 1820.
