August Fun Facts!

The King's Port Inn wants to wish everybody a happy August! This is peak summer season, and we hope you are getting out enjoying yourselves with family and friends. The weather is great and there are many activities in and around Kennebunkport. August is a great month in Maine. For the month of August, we wanted  to present some fun facts:
1.  August was named in honor of Augustas Caesar. It has 31 days because Augustus wanted as many days as Julius Caesar's month of July had. Previously named Sextilis in Latin, it was the sixth month of the Roman calendar.
2. August is also related to the word "auger", a hole digging tool, because farmers dug for next season at this time every year.
3. August is shared by the astrological signs of Leo the Lion and Virgo the Virgin. The Birthstone is the Peridol, and the flower is the Glaiolus.
4. Slavery was abolished in the British Empire with the Slavery Abolition Act, in August, 1834.
5. Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim across the English Channel, in August 1926.
6. The United States and Canada formed the North American Aerospace Defense Command(NORAD), in August 1957.
7. MTV network debuted on cable television, actually playing music videos 24 hours a day, in August 1981.
8. U.S. President Ronald Reagan fired 11,359 striking air-traffic controllers who ignored his order for them to return to work, in August, 1981.
9. Iraq invaded Kuwait, leading to the First Gulf War, in August, 1990.
10. NASA's curiosity rover landed on the surface of Mars, in the search for water, the main ingredient for life on the planet, in August, 2012.
