Reading Material

The King's Port Inn is hoping everybody is enjoying this winter season. It's a little more wintry than normal, but we are getting through it. It's hard to believe we've had five snowstorms in the last ten days! We've seen the arctic vortex, bitter cold streaks, and records amout of snow for the month of February.
However, there is a bright side: Reading. When the weather is bad and you don't feel like going out, there is nothing better than staying at home in the warmth of your bed and reading. Take the excuss of winter and catch up on all those book you've been meaning to read. To give you some help in your reading choices, we would like to present the best books for the winter of 2017:
The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman: This fantasy adventure book explores the early life of His Dark Materials hero Lyra Belacqua. The book begins ten years before the events described in Northern Lights. The central them in the book is the struggle between a despotic organisation and free thought and speech.
Age of Anger: A History of the Present by Pankaj Mishra: This book focuses in on terror attacks, Trump, and Twitter Wars. It is about the anger that seems to be the predominant emotion in public life these days. The book explores how globalism, technology and the West's botched foreign policy have left hundreds of millions of people angry.
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi: This book is a debut novel which stretches from 18th-century Ghana(Africa) to the present day. It is about two sisters, Esi and Effia and their descendants in the US slave trade.
Into the Water by Paula Hawkins: This is Hawkin's second novel, very similar to his first novel, The Girl on the Train. It is a book about murder, mystery and deception, revolving around a single mother and a teenager found dead. There are many twists and turns in this small town mystery book.
The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy: This book is perhaps the most eagerly awaited book of the year. It has been 20 years since Arundhati Roy published her prize-winning debut novel , The God of Small Things. This second book, will contain "a glorious cast of unforgettable characters, caught up in the tide of history".
