History of Halloween!

The King's Port Inn would like to wish everybody a Happy Halloween! This is a great time of year in Maine! Dressing up in costumes, trick-or-treating, going to parties, haunted hayrides and haunted houses, is fun for everybody. We hope you have a great Halloween, and don't eat too much candy! Here is a brief history of Halloween:
The origin of Halloween began over 1900 years ago in England and Ireland. It was a Celtic celebration of the new year, called Samhain which occurred on November 1st. The Celtic druides revered this holiday because it was said that the souls of the dead supposedly could mingle with the living. Bonfires were a large aspect of this holiday.
Samhain remained popular until St. Patrick and other Christian missionaries arrived in the area. As the population began to convert to Christianity the holiday began to lose its popularity. The Church instead used these holidays with a Christian twist to bring paganism and Christianity together, making it easier for local populations to convert to the state religion.
Another tradition of the druidic belief is that during the night on November 1st, that the souls of the dead could roam the earth with joy to greet the arrival of "their season"-the long nights and early dark of the winter months. The souls had their fun with people, and the only way people could escape them is to offer them fancy foods and sweets. Or, a human could disguise himself as one of them and join in their roaming(hence dressing up for Halloween).
Today costumes take the place of disguises and candy has replaced fruits and other fancy foods. Originally trick-or-treating began as "souling" , when children would go door-to-door on Halloween, with soul cakes, singing and saying prayers for the dead. Over the course of history Halloween's visible practices have changed with the culture of the day, but the purpose of honoring the dead, veiled in fun and festivities, has remained the same.

October Fun Facts!

The King's Port Inn wants to wish everybody a happy October! This is a great time to be in Maine, with the autumn foliage, cooler weather, pumpkins and Halloween! We hope you get out and enjoy this season. We wanted to present some fun and interesting facts about the month of October:
1. October was the name of the eighth month of the year in the Roman calendar. It means octo, which means eight. When the Romans converted to a 12-month calendar, the name October stuck, even though it's now the 10th month.
2. October's Full Moon, the "Full Hunter's Moon", is especially unique this month, because it takes on the mantle of the "Harvest Moon". This moon usually occurs in September, but occasionally happens in early October instead. This year, it fell on October 5th.
3. October's birth flowers are the cosmos and the calendula or marigold. Cosmos are a symbol of joy in life and love and of peace. The calendula represents winning, grace, grief, or chagrin.
4. October's birthstone is the opal, which symbolizes faithfulness and confidence. Gem-quality opals are known for their play of color, caused by the diffraction of light. They are available in several types, including black, fire, and white opals. Common opals do not shimmer.
5. October 9th is Columbus Day, which is always observed on the second Monday in October. It was on October 12, 1492 that Christopher Columbus landed on a small island in the Bahamas, convinced that he had reached Asia. He is considered the first European discoverer of the Americas.
6. Canada celebrates it's Thanksgiving on October 9th this year. The first Thanksgiving Day in the Canadian Confederation was observed on April 15, 1872. In 1957, a proclamation permanently set the date to the second Monday in October to celebrate "general thanksgiving to Almighty God for the blessings with which they have been favored. That is, turkey and football!
