The King's Port Inn would like to wish everybody a happy Thanksgiving! We wish you a wonderful day with your family, friends and loved ones. Thanksgiving is a great holiday to spend with the people you care about. Please enjoy your turkey, dressings, potatoes, squash, and apple pie. Just remember to leave room for dessert!
On this Thanksgiving, we want to share some interesting facts about the holiday. We all know the basics, but here are some things you probably didn't know:
1. The first known Thanksgiving feast held in North America was by the Spanish Conquistadors. In May of 1541, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado held a feast for 1500 men in what today is known as the Texas Panhandle.
2. Thanksgiving was not officially a national holiday until after Congress declared it one in 1941. Also, President Franklin Roosevelt initially declared Thanksgiving for the 3rd Thursday in November to lengthen the holiday shopping season. This was eventually changed back to the 4th Thursday.
3. Turkeys were the first animals in America to be domesticated. They can run up to 20 miles per hour. They can also burst into flight approaching speeds between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds.
4. There are over 280 million turkeys sold for Thanksgiving every year.
5. There were no turkeys served on the first Thanksgiving! Historians say the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians served deer or venison, ducks, geese, oysters, lobster, eel and fish. They probably ate pumpkins, but no pumpkin pies, along with cranberries.
