The King's Port in is hoping everybody is having wonderful summer season! We hope it's fun and safe, and filled with many outdoor activities. One of the best outdoor activities a person can enjoy is going to the beach! Most residents of Maine will tell you that going to the beach is very special and unique, due to the cold weather year round. We as Mainers(and New-England for that matter) have a very short season to enjoy the beach, so we take advantage of it when we can.
Kennebunk Beach is so named from the Abenaki language meaning "long cut bank". It is in reference to the Great Hill at the mouth of the Mousam River, which would have been an important landmark to native Americans when travelling in their canoes.
The first Europeans to visit Kennebunk Beach were 16th century fisherman from England. They came during the summer season with large fishing vessels to bring back fish to the markets in England. The area wasn't settled until the 1620's, when Kennebunk was part of Wells. Kennebunk broke from Wells in 1820.
Kennebunk Beach is a long sandy beach comprised of 3 separate and distinct beachheads. The first one being called "Gooches Beach", the second being called "Middle Beach", and the third called "Mother's Beach". During the summer, there are active life guards on duty along with regular police patrols. Parking is available at the beach with a valid parking permit from the town. The cost is $20 for a day pass(We offer them at our hotel for $10 a day). Dogs are allowed at Kennebunk Beach before 9am and after 5pm during the summer. They are allowed all day after the summer season. Kennebunk Beach is truly an amazing beach and we hope you all get a chance to experience it.
