The King's Port Inn would like to wish everybody a happy Saint Patrick's Day! Saint Patrick's day is celebrated this year on Thursday, March 15th. It is a cultural and religious celebration of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. He was born in 385 AD and lived until 461 AD.
The day commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It is celebrated by the Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran, and Eastern Orthodox Church. Saint Patrick's Day also celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish. It is an official public holiday in the Republic of Ireland. The day usually includes parades, festivals, and church services.
In honor of Saint Patrick's Day, the King's Port Inn would like to share some fun facts:
1. The actual color of Saint Patrick is blue. Green became associated with St. Patrick's Day during the 19th century. Green was used because it represented fairies and immortals in Irish legend, and farmers also used it to encourage crop growth.
2. The very first St. Patrick's Day parade was not in Ireland, but in Boston in 1737.
3. 34 million Americans have Irish ancestry, according to the 2003 U.S. Census. That's almost nine times the population of Ireland.
4. Nine of the people who signed our Declaration of Independence were of Irish origin, and nineteen Presidents of the U.S. proudly claim Irish heritage-including President George Washington.
5. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the highest number of leaves found on a clover is 14.
6. Legend says that each leaf of the clover means something; the first is hope, the second for faith, the third for love, and the fourth for luck.
