The King's Port Inn would like to wish everybody a Happy Labor Day Weekend! This is the last official weekend of the summer season and we hope you get out and enjoy it with family and friends. Labor Day honors the American Labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. It is celebrated on the first Monday of September, and it is also a federal holiday.
Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. "Labor Day" was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City. In 1887, Oregon was the first state of the U.S. to make it an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty U.S. states officially celebrated Labor Day.
Canada's Labour Day is also celebrated on the first Monday of September. More than 80 countries celebrate International Workers' Day on May 1-the ancient European holiday of May Day-and several countries have chosen their own dates for Labour Day.
Also, in the United States, many school districts resume classes around the Labor Day holiday weekend. It is time for students to go back to school and do homework! In Virginia, school starts after Labor Day, in order to give families another weekend to visit amusement parks in the state. This law is called "Kings Dominion law" and named after one such park.
Also, in United States sports, Labor Day weekend marks the beginning of many fall sports. NCAA college football teams usually play their first games that weekend, and the NFL, the National Football League, traditionally play their kickoff game the Thursday following Labor Day. NASCAR has auto races held on Labor Day weekend. Labor Day is also the middle point between weeks one and two of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships held in Flushing Meadows, New York.
In fashion, Labor Day is considered the last day when it is acceptable to wear white, or seersucker.
The King's Port Inn has availability for Labor Day weekend. We have a Luxury King Suite with Jacuzzi tub for only $259.00 a night.
