Reading Material

The King's Port Inn is hoping everybody is enjoying this winter season. It's a little more wintry than normal, but we are getting through it. It's hard to believe we've had five snowstorms in the last ten days! We've seen the arctic vortex, bitter cold streaks, and records amout of snow for the month of February.
However, there is a bright side: Reading. When the weather is bad and you don't feel like going out, there is nothing better than staying at home in the warmth of your bed and reading. Take the excuss of winter and catch up on all those book you've been meaning to read. To give you some help in your reading choices, we would like to present the best books for the winter of 2017:
The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman: This fantasy adventure book explores the early life of His Dark Materials hero Lyra Belacqua. The book begins ten years before the events described in Northern Lights. The central them in the book is the struggle between a despotic organisation and free thought and speech.
Age of Anger: A History of the Present by Pankaj Mishra: This book focuses in on terror attacks, Trump, and Twitter Wars. It is about the anger that seems to be the predominant emotion in public life these days. The book explores how globalism, technology and the West's botched foreign policy have left hundreds of millions of people angry.
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi: This book is a debut novel which stretches from 18th-century Ghana(Africa) to the present day. It is about two sisters, Esi and Effia and their descendants in the US slave trade.
Into the Water by Paula Hawkins: This is Hawkin's second novel, very similar to his first novel, The Girl on the Train. It is a book about murder, mystery and deception, revolving around a single mother and a teenager found dead. There are many twists and turns in this small town mystery book.
The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy: This book is perhaps the most eagerly awaited book of the year. It has been 20 years since Arundhati Roy published her prize-winning debut novel , The God of Small Things. This second book, will contain "a glorious cast of unforgettable characters, caught up in the tide of history".

Things To Do In Maine In The Winter!

The King's Port Inn is wishing everybody a wonderful winter season! We hope you are spending time with family and friends and doing the activities that you love. We wanted to remind you Maine is a great place for fun outside recreation during the snowy season. Maine is a very big state, and if you don't mind travelling, there are many great winter events all within driving distance. To name a few:
Nordic Skiing In Acadia National Park. Many of Maine's ski resorts(Sugarloaf, Saddleback, Sunday River) have their own Nordic areas, but none match the beauty of Acadia National Park. The views from Acadia's trails are beautiful, and it's called Maine's "secret wonderland". With only a few inches of snow and some grooming, the carriage roads in the park make the perfect cross-country ski trails. Located about 4 1/2 hours from Kennebunkport.
Camden Snow Bowl. The Camden Snow Bowl is a ski resort in eastern Maine, with a cozy 1300 foot mountain called Ragged Mountain. But it has a big perk: it is the only ski resort on the east coast where you can ski and enjoy spectacular ocean views from the summit. The Snow Bowl is also famous for its 400-foot toboggan run, open to the public on weekends and holidays, which attracts thrill seekers to the US National Toboggan Championships. Located about 2 1/2 hours from Kennebunkport.
Dog Sledding/Skijoring. There are several outfitters in Maine that will give you an unforgettable taste of winter adventure. Maine Dog Sledding Adventures offers 3-day, 2-day, and full or half day tours for groups of 1-4 at the base of Mt. Katahdin. They also teach Skijoring, a relatively new sport making waves across New England that lets adventurers ride with their own dog(or one of theirs) with relatively little equipment. About 4 1/2 hours from Kennebunkport.
Catch A Big One On Moosehead Lake. Seasoned ice fishers can simply obtain a license and head out to the ice on one of Maine's beautiful frozen lakes. On Moosehead Lake, visitors can rent ice shacks for the day, and several outdoor outfitters(such as Northwoods) offer guided ice fishing tours. About 4 hours north of Kennebunkport.
We at the King's Port Inn hope this helps you with some winter ideas. We have availability for the month of February. We have premium king rooms for only $89 a night. We also have Jacuzzi Fireplace suites for only $149 a night. All rooms include free continental breakfast, free wi fi, and free parking. To make a reservation, please call us at 1-800-286-5767. We would be happy to hear from you.

February Fun Facts!

The King's Port Inn is hoping everybody is enjoying the month of February! Even though it's snowy and cold, there are still plenty of good reasons to visit Kennebunkport. Lots of good restaurants and shops are open year round. Also, there are many outdoor activities to be enjoyed in Maine; such as skiing, snowboarding, and ice fishing. We are located only 1 1/2 hour away from major ski resorts and there are many local nature trails in the area. We hope you get out and enjoy yourselves.
In honor of February, we would like to present some fun facts about the month of February!
1. In early history, there was no February! The Romans developed a 10 month calendar that began with the spring equinox in March and ended in December.
2. It is believed the reason why February was overlooked when this calendar was created, was that winter weather had little to do with the harvest in the northern hemisphere.
3. The Romans essentially considered the winter a period of time with no distinctive months.
4. The second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, wanted the calendar more accurate, so he synchronized it with the actual lunar year, which is roughly 354 days long. Thus, two months were created; January and February.
5. At that time, both January and February had 28 days. But because Romans believed even numbers were bad luck, they added a day to January to make it 29 days long. February was left untouched, remaining the "unlucky" month for honoring the dead and performing rites of purification. The word February derives from "februum" which means purification.
6. Julius Caesar changed this lunar calendar to a solar based calendar, and 10 days were added to the year.
7. February remains the shortest month of the year, and as a result,it has some unique attributes. Once every six years, February is the only month that has four, full seven-day weeks. Also, in leap years, it is the only month that begins and ends on the same weekday.
8. People born on the leap year technically celebrate their birthday only once every four years, but most observe it on the 28th.
9. Americans celebrate Valentine's Day and Groundhog's Day in the month of February. Also, the birth of two presidents(Abraham Lincoln, Feb. 12th and George Washington Feb. 22nd), and Black History Month.
10. February is a time for families, especially in Canada, where Family Day is celebrated on the third Monday of the month in many provinces.
We hope you enjoyed these fun facts. The King's Port Inn has availability for the month of February. We have premium rooms with king beds for only $89 a night. We also have Jacuzzi Suites for only $119 a night. Each room includes free continental breakfast, free wi fi, and free parking. To make a reservation, please call us at 1-800-286-5767.
