Memorial Day In Kennebunkport

The King's Port Inn would like to wish everybody a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend. We hope you take the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. Also, please remember the men and women who died while serving this country. Their sacrifices should never be forgotten.
The first Memorial Day was originally called "Decoration Day". It all started in 1868, in Decatur, IL. when Union veterans from the Civil War decorated the graves of the war dead with flowers. By the 20th century the holiday had merged to include all Americans who had died while in the military service. It also typically marks the start of the summer vacation season.
There will be several Memorial Day services held in the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport area. Here is a description of the local services:
KENNEBUNKPORT: The Memorial Day parade will kick off at 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 30th, from Temple Street and wind down through Spring Street and down Western Avenue to Cooper's Corner, and back again. A 21-gun salute will be held at the Mathew Lanigan Bridge.
CAPE PORPOISE: Half an hour after the ceremony in Dock Square, a smaller version of the Dock Square parade will move to Cape Porpoise.(11:30 a.m.)
KENNEBUNK: The Memorial Day Parade will begin at 2 p.m., Monday. The route will take marchers along Main Street and feature the Kennebunk High School band, among others. A free Memorial Day Wounded Heroes Concert will follow at 3 p.m. at the Waterhouse Center in downtown Kennebunk.
ARUNDEL: The Arundel Historical Society will host a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Veteran's Memorial at the fire station on Limerick Road.

Some Things To Do in Kennebunkport

The King's Port Inn, located in the heart of Kennebunkport, would like to take this opportunity to share some local attractions to our guests not farmiliar with the area. These attractions are what makes Kennebunkport a lovely tourist spot and a beautiful seaside community. We hope you have time to visit and enjoy these great destinations. To name a few:
1. Walker's Point, the Bush Compound. Located off Ocean Avenue, 2 miles from the center of town, is the summer home of former president George H. W. Bush. There is a small shoulder off the road, where you can pull over and take pictures of the Compound. The estate has been in the family for over 100 years.
2. Kylie's Chance Lobster Tour. Sitting behind the Pilot House, on the pier, is the lobster boat Kylie Chance. This 1 and 1/2 hour tour takes you up the Kennebunk River, past Walker's Point, and past the manions on Ocean Avenue. Then the lobster traps are brought out of the water and you can see what was caught the night before. A perfect Maine outing.
3. Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge. Located off Rt. 9 in Wells, this refuge is a terrific place to go for a walk and enjoy nature's scenery. Walk through the salt marsh and forested uplands: a beautiful area that Rachel Carson would have loved.
4. World Famous Clam Shack. The Clam Shack is one of the most popular take out stands in the world. Located right on the Kennebunk Bridge, this stand-up shack offers the best lobster rolls in town. Lobster rools are cloaked in both butter and mayo to satisfy every vacationer.
5. Kennebunk Beach. Located off Beach Avenue, Kennebunk Beach is comprised of 3 smaller beach heads: Gooches Beach, Middle Beach and Mother's Beach. Parking is free during the off season and the beach is easily accessible. During the summer months beach passes are available for only $5 day for guests at the King's Port Inn.
