Opposed to our usual Winter Wonderland this time of year, the snow has managed to elude us. If you're like me than the unsual warm weather is a welcome change of pace.

No snow means an easier travel. And where better to spend a beautiful winter weekend than curled up in one of our suite's with four polster king sized bed, or enjoying a relaxing soak in a two person marble jacuzzi tub. Breakfast is always included in the price of the stay.

Here in York County there are miles of beautiful rocky coast, and sandy shores. Some of Maine's premier beaches are located less than one mile from us here at the King's Port Inn, one of Kennebunk / Kennebunkport's most recognized Inn's. Known for it's amazingly convenient location, walking distance to almost all shops and restaurants in Kennebunkport. If you're looking for a relaxing get away, the King's Port Inn is the place for you. Try one of our marble two person jacuzzi's to wash off all that sand from the beach.

The beaches in town:

-Parsons Beach, a long sandy beach, surrounded by Maine dunes, located near the Kennebunk / Wells border, off of route 9. Free parking is available.

-Kennebunk Beach, which includes Mother's Beach, Middle Beach, and of course Kennebunk's largest beach Gooch's. Two roads off of route 9 will bring you to the ocean front: Beach Road, or Sea Road. These are the beaches located less than one mile from us here at the King's Port Inn. Parking passes are required for these beaches and are available for rental here at the front desk for our quests to use.

-Colony Beach, a smaller rocky beach is located directly across from the Colony Hotel off of Ocean Avenue.

-Goose Rocks Beach, is a more secluded beach with shallow tidal pools. Located on the King's Highway off route 9. Parking stickers are available at Town Hall or the Kennebunkport Police Station.

Coastal Fishing

It's July already and Stripers are in the water, Striped Bass that is. People in town have been landing them left and right. May is usually the month the striped bass start to head into Maine seas. They come in schools (lots of small fish) often referred to as "schoolies". Now in July those "schoolies" have started to grow and are now Big Fish.

Rules and regulations about fishing for striped bass: The limit is one fish per day. The length allowed to keep is 20 inches to 26 inches, those are what we like to call "keepers". Also any striped bass over 40 inches are allowed to be kept, still one per day though. Once you have caught your limit of one fish per person per day, you may keep fishing but all other fish caught must be released. There is more information available at http://www.maine.gov/dmr. Information about various charters in the area can be obtained here at the King's Port Inn, located in the center of Lower Village Kennebunk / Kennebunkport. The King's Port Inn is just minutes walking to some of the best fishing spots in town. A couple great places to try throwing in a line are the Jetti at the Colony Beach, the Cape Porpoise Pier, or anywhere just off the ocean shore. Here's a helpful hint, they like to stay near the rocks. Lots of luck !

The Sun has arrived and it's time to get out and enjoy the water. The next two months here in Maine are spent taking full advantage of our beautiful ocean front beaches. Located just one mile from us here at the King's Port Inn we are within walking distance of 2 miles of some of the best ocean views in all of Maine.

The Sun is out and what better way to spend the day than soaking up some rays at the beach. Whether it's building a sandcastle with the kids, curling up with a good book, or just jumping in the water to beatthe heat, the beach is the place to be.

Kayaking Through History

On Sunday September 12th, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Coastal Maine Kayak and the Brick Store Museum are teaming up to offer Kayaking Through History. It will be a guided kayak excursion up the Kennebunk River.

To go along with this fun river experience, the Brick Store Museum is holding a new exhibition: " In the Maine Stream". The exhibit features vintage paddles ands oars, and an 1899 Wabanaki birchbark canoe.

Participants for this river adventure will experience the Kennebunk River from unique perspectives. You will be given a narrated scenic tour of the river. You will see georgious views of nature and such local areas as Cape Arundel Golf Club, Picnic Rock, Durell's Bridge, and many other places of interest.

Ogunquit Playhouse presents: Spamalot !

This hilarious musical comedy is now playing at the Ogunquit Playhouse. The show will run through September 11th 2010.

Spamalot is based on the 1975 cult classic film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The plot remains very much the same which, of course is a clever spoof of the Knights of the Round Table.

Charles Shaughnessy ( from T.V.'s The Nanny and Mad Men ) plays King Arthur who is on a quest from God to find the Holy Grail. The Lady of the Lake is played by Rachel York and is truly a delite.

The Wedding Cake House is Open for Tours !

For only the second time in 190 years the Wedding Cake House will open it's doors to the general public. The tours proceeds will benefit local food pantries. The only other time there were tours of the Wedding Cake House was in 2005 when President George H.W. Bush and President Bill Clinton were raising money to help the Hurricane Katrina relief fund.

From August 15th through September 15th, Jimmy Barker ( the owner of the facility currently ) will be hosting tours of this historic home. The Wedding Cake House is located at 104 Summer Street in historic Kennebunk Maine. The Wedding Cake House is just a short 5-10 minute drive from us here at the King's Port Inn, just up the road on route 35.

The Wedding Cake House was built by George Washington Bourne for the event of his marriage in 1825. Bourne was an accomplished local ship builder who built custum furniture as well.

Tours will be given daily between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Wedding Cake House in not handicapped accessible. Parking is free on the property. Maine's premier Shipyard ales are brewed and served right here in Kennebunkport, at Federal Jacks Brew Pub. At Federal Jacks all of Shipyard's finest products are on tap. Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour holds 750-seats in a European style one-ring Big Top Tent ! The summer Circus Big Top Tour showcases the best young talent in the Circus Arts today, selected by audition to share the ring with professional circus artists.

Maine Women in the Arts will host its annual Summer Art and Crafts show at the Mosonic Hall on Temple, here in Kennebunkport Saturday July 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday July 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

More than 50 artist's from all around northern New England will have work on display at this years event. In addition to fine art and photography, Maine Women in the Arts will be showing a variety of crafts including wood, fiber, clay, and jewelry as well as hand-painted cards and prints.

Maine Women in the Arts is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to promote art in Maine.

Shipbuilding Odyssey

On July 25th, 2010, the Brick Store Museum is hosting the Shipbuilding Odyssey event. It is a look at Kennebunk's storied shipbuilding past. This event starts by giving you a brief look at what life was like in the Kennebunks' during the shipbuilding days of the 1800's. This adventure will take you on a trolley ride to various historic local sites associated with shipbuilding along the Kennebunk River. The afternoon concludes back at the Meseum for refreshments, viewing the collections, and you will recieve a special souvenir.

For this event, advance reservations are required by July 20th as space is limited for this signature event. For tickets, stop by or call (207) 985-4802. Tickets for this event are $30.00 per person.

Whale Watch and Scenic Cruises

Right here in Lower Village Kennebunk / Kennebunkport there are several great ways to connect with the outdoors and enjoy a day on the water. The famous Nick's Chance Whale Watch is docked less than five minutes walking distance from the front steps of the King's Port Inn. This whale watching adventure lasts 4 & 1/2 hours, and cruises 20 miles into the Atlantic Ocean to view whales, dolphins, and much more marine life of the Gulf of Maine.

The same company offers more than just whale watch tours. They also have a wonderful 1 & 1/2 hour Scenic Lobster tour. Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge

The Rachel Carson wildlife refuge provides us with a unique view of nature at its purist. The wildlife reserve is open daily from sunrise to sunset for bird watching and self-guided tours. The purpose of this refuge is to protect coastal saltwater marshes for the wildlife in Kennebunk and any southern Maine coastal area.

The one mile self-guided trail is located on route 9 just at the Kennebunk / Wells border, less than 5 miles from the King's Port Inn. Trolleys in Motion

The Seashore Trolley Museum is now open for your enjoyment and education. The Trolley Museum opened on Memorial day and will be open until Columbus day. They are open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. rain or shine.

Fish in the Water

It's June already and Stripers are in the water, Striped Bass that is. People in town have been landing them left and right. May is usually the month the striped bass start to head into Maine seas. They come in schools (lots of small fish) often referred to as "schoolies". Now in June those "schoolies" have started to grow and are now Big Fish.

Rules and regulations about fishing for striped bass: The limit is one fish per day. The length allowed to keep is 20 inches to 26 inches, those are what we like to call "keepers". Also any striped bass over 40 inches are allowed to be kept, still one per day though. Once you have caught your limit of one fish per person per day, you may keep fishing but all other fish caught must be released. There is more information available at http://www.maine.gov/dmr. Information about various charters in the area can be obtained here at the King's Port Inn, located in the center of Lower Village Kennebunk / Kennebunkport. A couple great places to try throwing in a line are the Jetti at the Colony Beach, the Cape Porpoise Pier, or anywhere just off the ocean shore. Just Off The Coast

These are just some of the more convienient Lighthoueses in southern Maine:

-Biddeford Pool has the Wood Island lighthouse, which was established in 1808, and is still an active United States Coast Guard aid for navigation.

-Cape Elizabeth is home to one of the most famous lighthouses in Maine, The Portland Head Light. Known for being the most photographed lighthouse in the country, The Portland Head Light was built in 1791 and is 80 feet tall.

-Kittery has two lighthouses, the Whaleback Light, and the Two Lights. The Whaleback Light is the southern most lighthouse that can be seen in Maine.

-Finally last but certainly not least, the closest lighthouse to the King's Port Inn is Goat Island Light. It is in fact the only lighthouse in Kennebunk / Kennebunkport. Established in 1833, this 25 foot tower is still in use today, and is only accesible by boat.

Memorial Day in Maine

In Kennebunk / Kennebunkport there are few events bigger than the observation of Memorial Day. There are three diferent parades to attend in town. The first will start Monday May 31st at 9:30 a.m. The parade will lead from Temple Street down through Spring Street, onto Western Avenue to Cooper's Corner, and then reverse direction. The second parade starts just after the commencement of the first and takes place along the main street of Cape Porpoise. The King's Port Inn is located directly in route of the first parade on 18 Western Avenue. Come and enjoy the sights and festivities. Relax on the beach or enjoy the ocean on a scenic tour of the area. The third parade starts at 1:45 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Kennebunk. Before the start of the parade in Kennebunk, there will be a Memorial ceromony and band concert at 1:30 on the steps of Kennebunk Town Hall.

In Kennebunkport, the season is in full swing. While enjoying the Memorial Day events, there are also other new things to try in town such as : horse drawn carriage ride, trolly tour, fishing charters, whale watches, lobster cruise tour, and many many restaurants to try. With Spring in full swing, there is lots going on in the Kennebunks. With the weather having been near perfect the last several weeks, lets look and see whats fun under the sun, and whats happening now on Southern Maine's Coast. Cape Arundel being the home course of former President George H.W. Bush, is known for being "sporty but dangerous". While Webhannet's location is devine, moments away from miles of beaches along the Atlantic Coast. In town, the Sunoco service station, at the corner of Western Avenue and Port Road, offer motor scooters that are available for rental or for purchase. What better way to enjoy a warm summer day then to take a ride along the beaches and take in the beautiful scenic views. For the water enthusiast, a great way to spend the day is to try kayaking up the Kennebunk, or Mousam rivers. Also located just a couple minutes walking distance from the King's Port Inn is the Franciscan Monastery. Open to the public, the Monastery is easily one of if not the most peaceful and secluded areas in all of Kennebunk / Kennebunkport.
